Waymo Co-CEO Dmitri Dolgov spoke at Y Combinator's Startup School 2026, sharing seven lessons on building and safely shipping physical AI. He traced Waymo's path from a dozen engineers hitting driving milestones in 2010 to a service now running 500K trips and 4 million autonomous miles per week across 15 US cities, and detailed the technical architecture (sensor fusion, a 'system one system two' foundation model, structure-augmented end-to-end design, and simulation-based world models) behind it. The talk matters as a rare inside look at what it takes to move AI from demo to safety-critical, real-world product at scale.
[02:27] Waymo serves about 500K trips and drives over 4 million fully autonomous miles per week across 15 US cities.
Riding in a self-driving car for the first time. Waymo cars are basically Uber Jaguars that drive themselves. They are still being tested but they have a great track record. They're cheap to ride and you don't have to tip the "driver! They are currently only available in Phoenix & San Francisco. Was a very cool (and trippy) experience!! — Peter Hill, March 19 at 8:48 PM
This time I brought my parents along to ride Waymo, the autonomous driving vehicle app. My dad loved it so much he recorded his own video en Espanol. — Sergio V. Leal, is with Maria Del Sagrario Leal and Jose Leal in Phoenix, AZ, March 14 at 5:40 AM
