Using a specialized olfactometer and full genetic sequencing of skin bacteria, researchers found that each species reads a person's unique skin microbiome differently, so someone irresistible to one species can be ignored by another. The findings suggest human attractiveness to mosquitoes comes down to individual bacterial and chemical signatures rather than one shared trait, with implications for repellent design given mosquitoes cause over a million deaths yearly and DEET resistance is rising.
